With the costs of heating on the rise, many places are feeling the sting, including commercial and industrial businesses. When you have a massive space to heat, your costs of heating oil can be substantially large for sure. However, many industrial businesses could easily see those heating costs lowered by taking a closer look at the efficiency of their building. If you are looking for ways to lower the amount of heating oil you use to keep your industrial business warm through the colder months of the year, there are three common culprits you should check out first in your building.

Shipping and receiving docks are poorly insulated around the doors.

Loads carried in, merchandise picked up, and daily processes carried out often keep the shipping and receiving docks of your industrial building open throughout all hours of the day and night. Because the doors in these areas are large enough to cater to the backside of trailers, you can definitely be losing a great deal of heat every time those doors open. To ward off problems with heat loss, make sure you have insulating plastic curtains in place and they are in good shape. Likewise, it is a good idea to install a blowback system around the doors that pushes cold air outside when the doors are initially opened.

There is too much ventilation around heat-producing machinery.

In an industrial setting, there can be a great deal of equipment and machinery in operation and a lot of these pieces produce a high level of heat. This usually means you have to have extra ventilation around this equipment to prevent it from overheating. However, too much ventilation will also pull out costly heat from your building and make it harder to keep the area warm. Have your ventilation systems assessed by a technician to ensure they are only pulling out a necessary amount of heat from a specific area.

The heat system is not as well-maintained as it should be.

Just having a heat system that is well maintained can go a long way toward ensuring your industrial building is as efficient as possible. If you have a dated system, it is best to have it checked regularly for problems. It is all too easy to disregard heating maintenance in an industrial setting because there are so many other matters to tend to, but having the equipment properly maintenanced could actually save you quite a bit of money on heating costs.
